Onyx has completed a further phase within its highly efficient, reliable and secure data centre in Edinburgh. The multi-million pound project has been designed and built by data centre solutions provider Keysource to deliver resilient cooling and electrical infrastructures whilst achieving an annualised PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of just 1.2.
The new data hall, one of five within the data centre, provides an IT load of 800kW and 84 rack positions with an average rack power density of 10kW and the ability to cool up to 20kW per rack. It utilises Keysource’s scalable Ecofris free-cooling solution, applying complete air separation using hot aisle containment and through wall flooded airflow topology. The innovative modular cooling system possesses the ability to be scaled to meet precise requirements without affecting performance.
The facility has been designed to offer robust levels of resilience across all UPS, power and HVAC systems to achieve high availability and concurrent maintainability. As a result, the data centre possesses 2N electrical infrastructure including 2N back-up power generation and 2N+1 UPS support, whilst the mechanical systems provide N+2 internal cooling and N+1 external heat rejection systems.
In addition, the fire detection and suppression systems are integrated to the building alarm system and connect direct to the building management system. This will enable Onyx to identify any operational issues or potential risks immediately, avoiding any unnecessary downtime or disruption.
Neil Stephenson, CEO of Onyx commented: “We operate a nationally acclaimed network of data centres throughout the UK to support our commitment to leading the world in innovative use and application of technology. Working closely with partners such as Keysource we are raising the bar for data centres in terms of unrivalled size and technical specification, so we can provide businesses with solutions to their complex problems.”
Mike West, Managing Director of Keysource said: “Our experienced engineering and project management teams has designed and built a facility which offers world class performance and high levels of resilience. Our flexible approach to Modular Data Centre Infrastructure enabled us to modify our proven designs to fit with the specific customer and project drivers.”
